    Going to your favorite fast food restaurant and thinking about ordering a soft drink to go with it? You may want to think again if that drink comes from a soda fountain machine.

    According to a new study published in the January issue of International Journal of Food Microbiology and covered on CNN, nearly half of 90 beverages from soda fountain machines in one area in Virginia tested positive for coliform bacteria. For those of you not familiar with the term, coliform bacteria are usually abundant in feces.

    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s drinking-water regulations require that all samples test negative for E.coli. As mentioned in the article, it’s too early to draw conclusions about machines in other places, but the finding itself makes you think…

    • Coliform bacteria isn't ONLY found in feces. Yes, it is usually found there, but I think it's misleading to tell people that "fecal bacteria" is in their soda, when in fact that's not the case. There are so many germophobes out there, and quite frankly, I think it's because of "scares" like this. There's no poop in your soda. If you want a reason to avoid the soda fountain, make it your waistline-- not your fear of poo-germs. ;o)
