They may indeed form naturally. As mentioned above, when PVD occurs, the vitreous gel may pull on the retina, causing tears in it. This usually tends to happen at an older age, although in people who are near sighted it may occur earlier in life.

I have a question in regards to preventative maintenance. If you don’t compete in sports or have any serious contact with your eyes, can something such as a hole or even tear form naturally?

This is actually not true. Pregnant women may indeed have retinal detachment, but not in normal pregnancy. A disease that can occur in pregnancy, called eclampsia, may raise the risks for retinal detachment. If you have a healthy pregnancy, though, that's one worry you can take off your mind.

Very informative. I have a question in regard to this condition and pregnancy, though. I've heard that pregnant women are more prone to retinal detachment, because of increase blood volume throughout the body, including the retinal vessels in the eye. Is this true, and is there anything pregnant women can do to prevent it?
